Based in: Lima, Peru
Managed by: Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH)
In collaboration with: The Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar (UASB) in Ecuador and the Universidad Núr (UN) in Bolivia, and Ministries of Education in all three countries.

The Andean CETT has strengthened reading instruction and increased the reading and writing skills of primary school students throughout the Andean region.  Teachers are improving their classroom practices and becoming more effective reading instructors in the early primary grades through Grade 3.

Achievements

  • In CETT schools, the majority of children are able to read in first grade. In second grade they are able to produce texts (stories, letters that they share with peers from neighborhood schools, recipes for local meals, etc.)  This is in dramatic contrast to non-CETT schools, where students often cannot read even at the end of third grade.
  • Drawing on international best practices, the Andean CETT has developed and tested a practical and innovative methodology that allows teachers be more effective in teaching children to read and write.
  • The Andean CETT training methodology gives teachers practical tools and children learn to read and write in a more interactive and stimulating environment.
  • Trainers visit teachers twice a month in their own classroom to reinforce training and help implement the innovative practices.
  • The Andean CETT is providing small libraries to classrooms and materials to support learning processes.
  • The Andean CETT piloted an online version of the CETT teacher training method with about 150 teachers in the three Andean countries. Online training has been given to over 560 teachers. It provides the same content as the in-person training and is accompanied by classroom follow-up to support teachers in using their newly-learned skills in the classroom.  Online training has the potential to be a cost effective way to reach more teachers.

Andean CETT Partnerships

To promote program sustainability, the Andean CETT is developing alliances with public and private institutions. Peruvian companies and non-profit foundations are also responding to the Andean CETT’s invitation to create partnerships. Pluspetrol, Aguaytía Energy, and Lima Tours, all private companies, have already committed resources to support the Andean CETT in reaching more children in the region.
